Graduate Record Examination
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is standard format test that is held commercially- to take admission in graduate schools particularly in the USA, as well as in other English speaking countries. GRE was first conceived and conducted by the Educational Testing Service (or ETS) in 1949; the exam focuses on evaluating the abstract thinking skills in the field of vocabulary, mathematics and analytical writing. The exam is conducted via computer that is conducted in chosen testing centers; but, paper-based exams are offered in the geographical areas of the world that are technologically impoverished.
GRE is a test of general as well as specific skills and abilities that the person acquires over time.
GRE test scores are used by colleges/institutes for their graduation program. The scores offer the common platform for assessing the qualifications of examinees that aids in judge grades and recommendations about the individual. GRE includes two separate tests.
GRE General Test: All the candidates need to take this test
GRE Subject Tests: Some colleges/institutes require candidates to take specific subject test for considering their admission for Graduation Program.
GRE General Test Overview
GRE General Test evaluates the test taker for sections like, critical thinking, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing skills that are not bound to any particular field of study.
Verbal Reasoning - this measures the skills that include the examinees ability to
- analyze and assess the given data and infer information from it
- analyze relationship between component areas of sentences
- realize associations in concepts and words.
Quantitative Reasoning - this measures the skills that include the examinees ability to
- comprehend the basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis
- reason quantitatively
- solve problems in a quantitative arrangement
Analytical Writing - this measures the skills that include the examinees ability to
- articulate complicated ideas understandably and efficaciously
- analyze accompanying and claims proofs
- Affirm ideas with genuine arguments and examples
- support a well-focused, logical discussion
- master the elements of common written English
Prospective graduate applicants take the GRE General Test. GRE test scores are readily used by the admissions, scholarship or fellowship panels to support the undergraduate records and other graduate qualifications for taking up higher studies. GRE scores offer common mode for evaluating the qualifications of applicants that aid in assessing the recommendations and grades of the aspirants.
Any of the recognized graduate, business or professional institute, or any authorized department or division within the college/institute, can recommend its applicants to take the General Test, Subject Test or both. If sanctioned by the GRE® Board, the college/institute awaiting recognition can also get the examinees score.
